At LetMeGo we use a 2-step euthanasia process. This means that an injection under the skin is given first to help your pet feel relaxed, become pain-free and help him/her fall asleep. This takes about 5-10 minutes.
There are a few reasons why we give this first injection:
* It allows your pet to be totally relaxed and pain-free after sometimes a period of having felt uncomfortable or being restless and not being able to settle. It can be an enormous relief for you to see your friend have a final painless and totally relaxed sleep.
* It means there is no need at any time to restrain your friend. He/she can be where you choose, on your lap, on the bed or on the lawn.
* Your friend will be totally unaware when the last injection is given. This is important as some animals get a little anxious when hearing clippers or when given intravenous injections.
In order to give this second injection some fur is clipped from one of the legs and a little pressure is applied to make the vein visible.
This final injection works within seconds. This happens without any sudden movement or sound. All you will notice is that the breathing stops.
Most people expect the eyes to close but this rarely happens. It's also possible for some urine or feaces to come out (an absorbent pad will be placed underneath to catch and absorb this).
